May 20, 2023OHP, MECHS Handle Oil Spill
By Nikki | on May 15, 2023
MARYSVILLE – At approximately 4 p.m. on Friday, May 12, there was an oil spill in the Ohio Hi-Point Automotive program at Marysville Early College High School.
A valve broke at the bottom of an oil recovery cage drum as students were cleaning the shop at the end of the school day.
Approximately 200 gallons of oil spilled into the back parking lot of Marysville Early College High School. Marysville facilities immediately contacted EMA Hazmat, EPA, and Ohio Hi-Point Career Center. Ohio Hi-Point contacted the Marysville Fire Department who responded quickly along with Union County Emergency Management Agency to provide personnel and safety equipment until the approved EPA provider arrived. Oil absorbent materials were used to contain and clean up the spill while Hogan, an EPA approved company, was dispatched to handle cleanup.
"Students and the instructor immediately jumped into action to ensure no oil leaked into the sewer drain and contacted the appropriate personnel," said Dr. Rick Smith, Ohio Hi-Point Superintendent.
"Their quick action along with Marysville's Transportation Department was extremely important to the EPA," said Ryan Walker, Operations Director for Marysville Exempted Village School District.
The oil spill did not damage any property.
