Samsung has begun development of a next

Nov 07, 2023Nov 07, 2023

In January Apple launched the new MacBook Pro with the M2 Pro and Mac mini powered by the M2. On Sunday Bloomberg news reported that Apple was working to deliver a series of new Macs this year powered by the next-gen 3nm based M3. Apple's Macs and iDevices will go unchallenged, power wise, until 2024 when Qualcomm's CEO admitted last week. New products powered by their new Oryon (and/or other brand) processors would be showcased at CES 2024 by various hardware OEMs with unknown shipping dates.

Apple's iPhone 14 Pro with the A16 Bionic is 20% faster than Samsung's latest Galaxy 23 Ultra according to Geekbench scores. Apple has continued to stay ahead of Qualcomm and Samsung processors that has frustrated Android smartphone fans. That frustration has boiled over at Samsung who is reportedly aiming to design and deliver a new generation of processors to power both their Mobile and PC devices.

According to a new Business Korea report, Samsung Electronics will enter competition to develop more advanced chips for smartphones and PCs by starting again to develop cores for central processing units (CPUs). The Korean tech giant is planning to lower its reliance on ARM and face off with Apple by loading CPUs of its own design into smartphones, tablets, and laptops.

Samsung Electronics recently assembled an internal team to develop CPU cores. To lead the team, the company hired Rahul Tuli, a senior developer who orchestrated CPU development projects at AMD.

Samsung has historically relied on British company ARM for CPU cores that go into its current Exynos APs. Samsung's rival Qualcomm also makes APs based on ARM's designs. If Samsung succeeds in developing its own CPU cores, it will be able to greatly improve the optimization of its smartphones.

Samsung Electronics is also accelerating the development of next-generation APs, including chips for Galaxy smartphones. At the end of 2022, the System LSI Division at Samsung Electronics launched the AP Solution Development Team along with the Mobile Experience (MX) Division to optimize APs. The team is carrying out advanced research on next-generation chips. Under the tentative name of the Galaxy Chip, the team is planning to set up a dedicated chip more optimized than existing ones. Industry insiders are expecting the first version of the Galaxy Chip to come out in 2025. However, since Samsung Electronics has just begun the development of its own CPU cores, the first version of the Galaxy Chip is highly likely to have ARM CPUs.

"If the development process is successful as usual, Samsung Electronics will be able to use its own CPUs by 2027," an industry insider said.

This does not mark the first time Samsung has attempted to develop its own CPUs. For more, read the full report by Business Korea.

Although Samsung has been a partner with Apple for displays, there has been a lot of tension in the relationship over the years. Samsung kept Apple's iPhone from being able to a implement a periscope lens for superior zoom by acquiring CorePhotonics that sued Apple over this technology. Recently, Ming-Chi Kuo forecast that BOE would be Apple's #1 OLED display supplier by 2025 but Samsung made it public indirectly that it would sue BOE over OLED patents if that was to occur. And today, The Information posted a report how Apple has tried to break away on their dependence on Samsung for displays for many years. You could check out that report, here.
