Shark Hoover Swivel XL Pet UH75200 upright vacuum review

We’ve tested hundreds of vacuums in our labs at Reviewed, and the best performers get vacuums placed on our best vacuum buying guide. Unfortunately, the Hoover Swivel XL Pet UH75200 (available at Walmart for $263.90) doesn't make the cut. During our lab tests, it did not maneuver around furniture easily, failed to pick up pet hair as advertised, and it has a few significant design issues. Overall, we feel like this vacuum doesn't provide a good value. There are much better vacuums on the market right now, including the Bissell 2252.

With its 29.5-foot cord and 8-foot hose, the Swivel XL Pet has good reach, which means you’ll have to re-plug the vacuum less often while you’re sucking up dirt, dust bunnies, and pet hair.

However, the Hoover vacuum's cord is manually wound, which we don't appreciate because we’d rather tap a button and have the cord rewind itself.

During testing, the Hoover Swivel XL Pet also did a decent job with our clearance tests. These tests consist of a sort of vacuum limbo, with the vacuum fitting and then being able to clean the far reaches under and around furniture.

We found that if you have, let's say, a bed with a 12-inch clearance, this Hoover vacuum can completely fit under it.

However, this number falls off quickly. For example, with 10 inches of clearance, the Swivel XL Pet only has about 14 inches of cleaning reach.

One of our major lab-based cleaning tests involves creating a mixture of dirt that contains grain sizes from fine talc to coarse sand. We then embed the mixture into our test carpets.

Hoover claims the Swivel XL's WindTunnel technology created edge-to-edge suction and delivers 25% more powerful cleaning on every floor type.

The lab test results show that's more or less true.

The Swivel XL Pet was able to pick up an average of 38.75% of dirt per pass. This performance is on par with other bagless uprights in its price range.

For example, the Shark Navigator NV352 also scored around 38% and the Bissell 22543 picked up around 41%, while the Hoover Whole House Rewind hit around 50% dirt pickup.

The Hoover has a "snowplow" effect when dealing with large debris and pet hair.

For a vacuum called the Hoover Swivel XL Pet, it did not do well in our pet hair pick-up tests. Hoover's website advertises that this vacuum can get "the pet hair hiding deep within your carpet, while the carbon pet filter keeps pet odors at bay."

On both medium and deep-pile carpets, this Hoover vacuum failed to pick up as much hair as its similarly priced competitors.

In fact, it left behind about 20% of the dog hair we spread out for it. In our experience, a decent upright vacuum should be able to get all the pet hair in one go.

We deduced the problem: The Swivel XL Pet has a snowplow issue when it encounters large debris—instead of suctioning it up, it simply pushes all that fluffy fur and dander along the floor surface.

All vacuums do this to some extent, but this Hoover vacuum's failing is pronounced.

The Hoover Swivel XL Pet's design is a death-by-a-thousand-cuts situation. First, its weight tips the scales at around 15 pounds and lacks a handle in the back. Consequently, we found this vacuum difficult to lift, and that's a hassle for anyone who has a second floor.

We also found that the motor gets very hot after about 15 minutes of operation. In our experience, motors that get hot after such a short time typically do not have good longevity.

And in the final design flaw, some bits of our testing dirt mixture spilled out when we removed the vacuum's dust bin. It's never a good sign when a vacuum makes a mess after cleaning.

The Hoover Swivel XL Pet is scoring 3.5 stars out of 5 at Target. Multiple owners are reporting the unit breaking down after 5-7 months of use.

However, owners that do like the Swivel XL Pet enjoy its swivel action, as well as the headlights on the brush head.

The Hoover Swivel XL Pet UH75200 just isn't very good in our opinion. It has moderately good dirt pickup, but poor pet hair cleaning.

Also, its fit and finish aren't up to snuff. Overall, we think there are better options out there like the Shark Navigator NV352 or the Bissell 2252.
